Bitcoin ATM installation pace rebounds

The number of cryptocurrency ATMs worldwide rose to 35,065 units. In early April, they were 5% lower at 33,389, according to Coin ATM Radar.

The United States remains the leader by the number of installed Bitcoin ATMs — 30,014 (84.7%). In second place is Canada with 2,740 units or 7.6% of the total. Australia ranks third with 463 (1.3%).

By manufacturer, General Bytes leads with 10,109 crypto ATMs (28.8%). Next are BitAccess (6,913, 19.7%) and Genesis Coin (6,596, 18.8%).

The leading Bitcoin ATM operator is Bitcoin Depot — the company operates 6,362 devices or 18.2% of the market. The top three also include Coin Cloud (4,265, 12.2%) and CoinFlip (4,043, 11.5%).

In January 2022 began a slowdown in the pace of installations. In the second half of last year only 94 new ATMs appeared, compared with 4,169 for January–June.

In February 2023, the Coin Cloud bitcoin ATM operator filed for bankruptcy. The company’s obligations to around 10,000 counterparties are estimated at between $100 million and $500 million.

In the same month, West Yorkshire Police and the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority conducted raids against illegal Bitcoin ATMs in the Leeds area. In March checks began in London.
