Kazakhstan uncovers scheme to buy cryptocurrency with counterfeit dollars

A group of individuals in Almaty intended to sell counterfeit $100 banknotes under the pretext of acquiring cryptocurrency. сообщает the local Financial Monitoring Agency.

Officials from the agency discovered and seized from the detainees banknotes of 2006 and 2017 series totaling $20,600.

Forensic analysis established that none of the notes matched the design samples issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States.

A pre-trial investigation has been opened into the storage and attempted sale of fakes, and the suspects have been remanded in custody.

Earlier in June, in Almaty authorities identified cryptocurrency online exchange, which operated without registration and a license to provide services from 2019 to 2022. The entrepreneurs stored their funds on Binance.
