Belarus Legalises Cryptocurrency Payments for Freelancers

Belarus allows freelancers to receive crypto payments via legalised crypto banks.

Freelancers in Belarus will be able to officially receive payment for their services in cryptocurrency. This was reported by Sputnik, citing the words of the Chairman of the National Bank of Belarus, Alexander Egorov.

“Previously, if a designer or programmer completed an order for a foreign client who offered payment in crypto, the individual found themselves in a grey area, unable to legally deposit these funds into an account or officially pay taxes on them. Now this barrier has been removed,” he explained.

Payments in digital assets will be made through crypto banks, which were legalised in January.

Decree No. 19 defines such a structure as a joint-stock company — a resident of the HTP from a special register of the National Bank. These companies will have the right to conduct token operations alongside traditional services. Their activities will be regulated by both the National Bank of Belarus and the High-Tech Park.

The HTP will be responsible for verifying software code, platform security, and encryption reliability.

“Blockchain technology combined with state regulation provides a level of transparency that ordinary banks can only dream of,” Egorov stated.

He also mentioned that crypto banks will issue cards for payments in regular stores. When paying, cryptocurrency will be automatically converted into Belarusian rubles at the current exchange rate.

An expert described the emergence of new structures as a “global transformation that changes the very logic of capital circulation and demonstrates Belarus’s readiness to lead in innovation rather than fear it.”

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly emphasised the need to create transparent regulation for the crypto market and appropriate control mechanisms.

He also instructed the banking sector to accelerate the implementation of digital payment services, based on QR code technology.

Back in the latter half of 2026, Belarus will begin the full operation of the digital ruble.
