Abkhazia extends internet access restrictions for miners

Abkhazia extends internet access restrictions for miners

The State Committee of Abkhazia for Communications, Mass Media and Digital Development extended restrictions on access to sites that use cryptocurrency miners.

Previous decree was in effect from December 28, 2020 to June 1, 2021. Now the restrictions have been extended to March 31, 2022.

Telecommunications operators must implement technical measures to block domain names and page pointers that enable “carrying out cryptocurrency mining”.

The exact sites in question are not specified.

Update:

Head of the committee Beslan Khalvash said, that the order also covers the closure of a number of VPN services, as providers have equipment to carry out blocks:

“Previously we blocked domain names and IP addresses; some users moved to VPNs, now we will block them. I would not like to comment on how to circumvent this ban; in the fight against mining we are entering a completely different level”.

In 2020, Abkhazia banned mining and restricted the import of equipment for cryptocurrency mining amid power-supply problems.

Subsequently, authorities extended the ban until 2022 and approved a number of penalties for engaging in such activity.
