Abkhazia proposes seizing transformers to curb mining

Ongoing raids in Abkhazia to confiscate equipment for mining cryptocurrency do not solve the problem of illegal mining. In a Sputnik Radio broadcast said Akhra Gaguliya, head of the Gudauta branch of Chernomorenergo.

For a comprehensive approach to solving the problem, he proposed seizing illegally installed transformers.

“I compiled a list of illegally installed transformers and handed it to the government. The Prime Minister backed the initiative, and perhaps this is the quickest and most fundamental way to change the consumption situation. Now we will work out how to seize them and where to install them,” said Gaguliya.

Meanwhile, Chernomorenergo will continue joint raid operations with law enforcement agencies.

“The fight against connecting mining equipment is an endless process,” added the head of the branch.

Earlier, Abkhazia had a ban on mining and the import of equipment in place until 31 March 2022.

At the end of March, the local parliament introduced fines and criminal liability for illegal electricity consumption for cryptocurrency mining.

The country has been conducting large-scale raids to identify illegal miners. Equipment has been found, including among officials.

In July, in several villages of the Ochamchyrsky district, a protest erupted over the seized Bitcoin miners.

Soon after, Abkhaz authorities began negotiations with Russia on electricity supplies to secure conditions for mining.
