Abkhazia Sets Tariffs for Miners

The Cabinet of Ministers of Abkhazia has adopted a series of measures to regulate mining, and set electricity tariffs for miners, according to the cabinet’s official website.

The decree \”On Measures to Regulate Cryptocurrency Mining\” establishes a temporary framework for regulating mining until the Abkhazian Ministry of Economy develops the corresponding legislative framework.

The ministry is to draft a bill defining cryptocurrency mining, approve licensing rules for mining, and establish rules for forming a single register of mining equipment within no more than 30 days.

The state-owned company \”Chernomorenergo\” should determine the parameters of permissible electricity consumption within 45 days.

\n

The decree prohibits the import of mining equipment for 60 days.

\n

It provides for registering miners as legal entities or individual entrepreneurs, and requires the Ministry of Economy to receive registration data and mining equipment details for inclusion in a single register no later than 7 November 2020.

According to the appendix to another cabinet resolution, the tariff for legal entities and individual entrepreneurs mining cryptocurrencies will be 1.50 rubles per kWh.

In December 2018, the Abkhaz authorities banned mining, but did not prescribe clear sanctions against violators.

In the first six months of 2020, mining equipment was imported into Abkhazia worth 84 million rubles.

According to local media, due to mining Abkhazia’s power system has become on the verge of a crisis.

\n

In September, Abkhazia’s President Aslan Bzhania stated that the authorities would not ban mining, but would regulate it.
