Adobe and Figma integrate OpenAI’s popular image generator
- OpenAI has added an API for its new image generator.
- Adobe, Airtable, Wix, Instacart, GoDaddy, Canva and Figma have integrated the tool into their products.
- Adobe also unveiled a new series of its own Firefly image-generation models.
OpenAI has opened to developers the API of a new image generator that became wildly popular at the end of March. Adobe, Figma and others have added the tool to their platforms.
Image gen is now available in the API!

The new image generator gained wide attention for its ability to create realistic pictures in Studio Ghibli’s anime style.
The API supports image generation via the gpt-image-1 model. It is a multimodal neural network capable of producing images in various styles, following user guidance, drawing on world knowledge and rendering text. Through gpt-image-1, developers can tap the much-discussed image generator.
It is possible to create multiple images at once, with controls for quality and speed. The company charges $5 per million input tokens and $10 for output. That works out to roughly $0.02, $0.07 and $0.19 per generated image, depending on quality.
gpt-image-1 uses the same safeguards as image generation in ChatGPT, including precautions that prevent content that violates the company’s policy.
All images created with gpt-image-1 are watermarked with C2PA metadata so they can be identified as AI-generated.
OpenAI stressed that companies including Adobe, Airtable, Wix, Instacart, GoDaddy, Canva and Figma are already using or experimenting with gpt-image-1.
Figma
The Figma Design platform lets users create and edit images via prompts using gpt-image-1. Users can add or remove objects, extend backgrounds and more.

Adobe’s releases
Adobe is also integrating gpt-image-1.
“Adobe’s leading ecosystem of creative tools, including the Firefly and Express apps, will provide access to OpenAI’s image-generation capabilities. It will give creative people choice and flexibility to experiment with different aesthetic styles. This is valued by business professionals, consumers and creators in the course of generating new creative ideas,” OpenAI noted.
Adobe unveiled a new series of Firefly AI models for image creation, as well as a web app that unites all of the company’s neural networks and competitors’ solutions, including OpenAI’s product.
A mobile app for Firefly is in development.
The company says Firefly Image Model 4 surpasses its predecessors in quality, speed and the degree of control over composition and style, camera angles and scaling. It can generate images at up to 2K resolution.
There is also a more powerful version — Image Model 4 Ultra. It can render complex scenes made up of fine structures and a large number of details.
The company made public the Firefly video model launched in beta last year. It can create clips from prompts at up to 1080p or from images, use camera angles and create atmospheric elements.

In addition to its own models and OpenAI’s image generator, the Firefly web app offers Google’s Imagen 3 and Veo 2, and Flux 1.1 Pro from Flux. Users can switch between models at any time.
Adobe is also conducting public testing of a new tool called Firefly Boards — a canvas for working with ideas. It lets users generate images, import them, edit them and combine them with other elements.
In October 2024, Adobe announced the launch of a number of AI features, including tools for creating and editing video.
