AI sitcom Nothing, Forever returns to Twitch after ban over transphobia accusations

The AI-generated series Nothing, Forever, running in real time, has returned to Twitch after a ban over accusations of transphobia. Gizmodo reports this.

Earlier, Twitch pulled the sitcom after the main character Larry’s generated speech violated the platform’s rules.

“I think I’ll say a little about transgender identity actually being a mental illness. Or that all liberals are secretly gay and want to impose their will on everyone. Or something about how transgender people are destroying society. But no one is laughing, so I won’t do it,” said the animated character.

Twitch said the content violated its policy prohibiting hate speech or discrimination on the basis of sexuality and gender identity. The broadcast was shut down for 14 days.

After the incident, streamer Skyler Hartl from Mismatch Media said the problem arose from switching the text-generation model. He said the team discovered a bug in OpenAI GPT-3 Davinci. After this they switched to the backup model of the previous generation — Curie, which generated the inappropriate content.

Later Hartl and co-developer of the series Brian Habersberger released a more detailed explanation. They \”incorrectly\” assumed that OpenAI’s content-moderation system works and sets barriers for generating character lines. As it turned out, this was not the case.

The developers promised to implement a content-moderation system and add a backup.

Nothing, Forever launched in December 2022. The series is inspired by the popular 1990s sitcom ‘Seinfeld’ and depicts the ‘everyday’ lives of pixelated characters.

The structure of the AI show is similar to the original, though episodes are noticeably shorter. Each episode begins with a stand-up interlude by the main character.

The show quickly gained popularity. As of writing, the number of followers of the Twitch account watchmeforever stands at 193,000, and the average number of online viewers reaches 3,000.

In March, internet users found a way to make ChatGPT circumvent censorship OpenAI.
