Akash Mainnet 2 launches — an open-source decentralized cloud

On March 8, the Akash Network decentralized cloud hosting service launched a new version of the Akash Mainnet 2. ForkLog reported this, citing representatives of the project.

Users of Akash Network supply and lease server capacity for deploying applications and websites. The hosting operates on the Cosmos blockchain.

Last year, Akash Network launched Mainnet 1 with basic operations: processing transactions, staking, and voting by network participants. Since the launch of Mainnet 1, the price of the Akash Network utility token (AKT) rose by 18x — from $0.35 to $6.45 at its peak.

In Mainnet 2, developers implemented DeCloud — a decentralized cloud and an auction for server capacity. In the new network version, users can run websites, blog platforms, databases, games, DeFi projects, blockchain nodes, and other applications in Docker containers.

Advantages of a decentralized cloud over centralized counterparts:

• cost savings — renting capacity in Akash DeCloud is 2-3 times cheaper than Google Cloud or Amazon Web Services;
• fault tolerance — when connection to a provider is lost, Akash Network automatically moves applications to spare capacity from another user;
• flexibility — when selecting a provider you can specify the number of CPU cores, amount of storage, and preferred geographical location.

During DeCloud testing, developers deployed 3,600 applications in the decentralized storage. Among them 77 major projects: front-ends SushiSwap and Uninswap, a MySQL database, the Big Dipper blockchain explorer, and the Doom game.

In early March, Akash Network announced an integration with major compute-power provider Equinix Metal. The provider owns 220 data centers in 25 countries. Thanks to this collaboration, Akash Network users will gain access to a mature server infrastructure with low network latency.

Back in October 2020, the Akash Network project raised $640,000 in an IEO.
