Amazon Urged to Consider Bitcoin Reserve by Shareholder Group

The National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), representing Amazon shareholders, has proposed that the tech giant’s board of directors explore the possibility of converting “at least 5% of assets” into Bitcoin.

The initiative will be considered at the annual shareholder meeting in 2025.

According to the document, as of September 30, 2024, Amazon held $88 billion in cash and equivalents, as well as securities, including U.S. government bonds, and those of other countries and corporations.

The NCPPR noted that the yield provided by the latter class of assets is below the real inflation rate, resulting in the company “insufficiently” protecting shareholder capital.

The organization cited the example of MicroStrategy, whose securities outperformed Amazon by 537% in 2023. They attributed the discrepancy to the addition of digital gold to the corporation’s reserves.

Experts also noted the launch of Bitcoin ETFs by BlackRock and Fidelity. These issuers are the second and fourth largest institutional investors in the tech giant.

The NCPPR believes it is prudent to consider the benefits of Amazon holding “even 5%” of its assets in the leading cryptocurrency to maximize shareholder capital “without excessive volatility.”

Back in December, during a presentation to Microsoft’s board of directors, MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor presented a crypto strategy aimed at adding $5 trillion to the corporation’s capitalization.

He noted that the investment appeal of digital gold has increased due to the change in the U.S. government and the idea of a national Bitcoin reserve.

Currently, only 0.01% of public companies worldwide hold the leading cryptocurrency, according to OKG Research.
