AMD will not deliberately throttle GPU hash rates over miners
The AMD corporation does not plan to further throttle the performance of Radeon RX 6700 XT GPUs due to heightened miner demand, as this has already been done at the hardware level. This was stated by Nish Nilalodjanan, the company’s product manager, at a PC Gamer briefing.
“The short answer: no. We won’t block not only mining, but any workload,” said Nish Nilalodjanan.
The new GPU features fast Infinity Cache memory with a reduced bus width.
“The RDNA architecture, and even more RDNA 2, was designed specifically for gaming. Therefore Infinity Cache and the narrower bus width were chosen to achieve particular gaming results,” said an AMD representative.
He added that mining requires higher bandwidth and a wider bus, so the Radeon RX 6700 XT architecture was not originally designed for cryptocurrency mining.
“All our optimizations are, first and foremost, related to gaming. Gamers will gain a lot from this, but it won’t be the ideal option for mining workloads,” concluded Nish Nilalodjanan.
High-end RDNA 2 GPUs based on the Navi 21 chip reach hash rates of about 58-64 MH/s when mining Ethereum.
Earlier, specialist media, citing an insider, reported plans for AMD to release a line of specialized mining GPUs for cryptocurrency mining.
In February Nvidia announced the decision to halve the hash rate of the desktop GeForce RTX 3060. It explained this as aimed at catering to gamers’ needs and claimed that bypassing the protection was impossible.
Later, Chinese miners using an undocumented algorithm managed to bypass the GPU’s protection and push the device to 50 MH/s. However, the information has not received official confirmation.
Subsequently, the GeForce RTX 3060 performance limits were circumvented using Nvidia’s experimental driver. The company confirmed the bug and removed the software from its site.
