Analysts forecast cryptocurrency fraud volume to reach $4.5 billion

In 2021, the amount of losses from cryptocurrency fraud could double and reach $4.5 billion. This is the assumption advanced by specialists from Kaspersky Lab, Izvestia reports.

The company’s chief technology expert, Alexander Gostev, noted that in 2020 new methods of fraud spread among criminals. For example — schemes targeting the DeFi sector.

\n

The expert believes that the number of such projects will continue to rise, along with losses from attacks.

\n

Another reason for the growth in fraud volume he cited is the rise in cryptocurrency prices — as their value increases, the losses in fiat currency will scale.

\n

Among the popular fraudulent schemes identified by Kaspersky Lab were the closure of Bitcoin exchanges on the pretext of technical problems or attacks, obtaining access to user data through fake apps or websites, and sending phishing emails.

\n

As reported in the Crystal Blockchain report, criminals began disposing of stolen cryptocurrencies 13 times faster.
