André Cronje, who has joined the Fantom Foundation’s board of directors, in an open letter to the team outlined the goals and priorities for Fantom’s development over the coming year.

According to him, the main task will be to create an environment for developers of decentralized applications (dapps). The main directions will be:
- Gas monetization — will allow dapp teams to earn revenue similar to content creators on YouTube or Twitch;
- Gas subsidies — will enable interaction with applications without the wallet having to pay the gas itself, promoting smoother onboarding;
- Account abstraction — there will be no difference between an externally owned account (EOA) and a contract, simplifying work with dapps;
- Economic abstraction of gas fees — will enable paying fees in tokens other than FTM;
- New middleware, including the Fantom Virtual Machine and a new storage mechanism. In Cronje’s view, smart-contract execution (i.e., the platform’s own EVM) remains the main bottleneck of the platform;
- Improving performance to the hardware limits of network throughput;
- Updating documentation and training application developers.
“Our goal is to scale the base layer and simplify for developers to create simple dapps and attract users by offering sustainable (non-token-based) business models,” Cronje stressed.
Regarding the project’s financial state, he noted that Fantom is in a stable and healthy position, despite the current economic climate.
Earlier in November, the price of the FTM token jumped by 20% on rumors of Cronje’s return to the Fantom Foundation.
