Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton have called for a ban on the creation of superintelligent AI until its use is deemed safe. This was reported by Bloomberg.
In a statement organized by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, a group of scientists and public figures advocated for a ban on developing artificial intelligence that significantly surpasses human capabilities. They urged delaying its creation until there is a “broad scientific consensus that it can be done safely and under control.”
Notable signatories include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, economist Daron Acemoglu, politician Steve Bannon, and former U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice.
Calls to slow AI development have been made before. This initiative, however, encompasses a broader range of professions and political views.
“What unites all these people is that, unlike machines, they are human, and therefore they genuinely care about a future where technology works for us, rather than becoming a new digital overlord,” noted Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and Future of Life Institute president Max Tegmark.
His organization recently published survey results showing that 73% of American adults want strict regulation of advanced AI technologies.
Some politicians, like Bannon, openly express concern about the risks of artificial intelligence.
Tegmark emphasized that the Future of Life Institute’s position does not contradict the desire to develop AI—it is about creating a safe and controlled solution.
Back in August, a study by Reuters and Ipsos revealed that U.S. citizens are deeply concerned about advances in artificial intelligence and its implications for unemployment.
