Apple is preparing to launch a wall-mounted display featuring Apple Intelligence for smart home management and video conferencing, according to Bloomberg, citing sources.
The agency reports that the company plans to announce the device in March 2025. It is described as a “home command center.”
Apple CEO Tim Cook aims to make the gadget, codenamed J490, a “force in the smart home segment,” the publication notes. He highlighted the device’s priority within the development and design departments. The product has been in the making for over three years.
The display features a screen approximately six inches in size, resembling a square iPad. The J490 includes a camera on the upper front panel, a built-in battery, and speakers. Apple will offer it in silver and black, according to journalists.
The gadget has a touchscreen display with an integrated operating system, but the company expects most users to employ the Siri voice assistant supported by Apple Intelligence. The hardware is developed based on the App Intents system, allowing AI to precisely manage applications and tasks.
The agency emphasized Apple’s ambition to “revitalize” Siri and Apple Intelligence with the J490.
The company positions the gadget as a tool for managing household appliances, interacting with Siri, and conducting video conferences via FaceTime. It will be able to connect to smart home infrastructure such as thermostats, lighting, locks, security cameras, sensors, fans, and other equipment.
The J490 will come preloaded with company apps, including services for browsing websites, listening to news and music. Users will have access to notes, calendars, and photos, Bloomberg noted.
Security will be a particular focus for Apple. The device will send alerts and display footage from cameras and smart doorbells.
According to the agency, the gadget’s price will be similar to competing solutions, ranging from $150 to $230.
Additionally, Apple is exploring the possibility of creating its own line of smart home accessories, including a security camera capable of functioning as a baby monitor. It will also be closely integrated with Apple Intelligence and Siri.
In October, Apple publicly released its artificial intelligence.
