Apple Unveils Upcoming AI Features

  • Apple has released the iOS 18.1 beta with Apple Intelligence, though not all announced AI features are included.
  • The company detailed its “responsible approach” to training neural networks.

On July 29, Apple launched the first version of Apple Intelligence, a suite of features utilizing artificial intelligence.

The new software is released in the iOS 18.1 beta and is also available on iPad and Mac. Registered Apple developers can access the AI features.

The preliminary version does not include all announced AI features. Currently available to developers are:

  • a new Siri appearance that allows the phone’s edges to glow;
  • some other enhancements to the voice assistant, such as the ability to understand natural speech with pauses;
  • Siri’s responses to Apple product-related questions;
  • improved photo search and clip creation;
  • transcription of mail, messages, and voice recordings;
  • a focus mode to display only important notifications;
  • a text writing assistant, Writing Tools.

Features absent from the iOS 18.1 beta, which will appear later, include:

  • image and emoji generation;
  • automatic photo processing;
  • further Siri enhancements, including user personality analysis and in-app actions;
  • ChatGPT integration.

The initiative was introduced on June 10 at the WWDC 2024 presentation in Cupertino. It was reported that Apple Intelligence would debut for all users in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. However, new information indicates the public release has been delayed by several weeks.

Apple Advocates for “Responsible AI Training”

Apple published a technical document detailing the models developed to support Apple Intelligence. It claims that no personal user data was used; instead, publicly available and licensed information was employed.

“Our models are designed to assist users in performing everyday tasks using Apple products. They are based on the company’s core values and principles of responsible AI use at every stage,” the document states.

For AI training, the corporation used Google’s chips. Nvidia, the leading AI chip manufacturer, is not mentioned in the description of the hardware and software infrastructure.

Apple Intelligence will not launch in the EU in 2024 due to “regulatory uncertainty.”

Previously, media reported on the tech giant’s work on integrating AI into the Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
