Artist blows up Lamborghini in protest against crypto-community values

A pseudonymous artist known as blew up a Lamborghini Huracan worth $250,000. He said his actions were a protest against the culture of quick wealth dominating among crypto users.

A high-mileage Lamborghini Huracan was blown up on February 2, 2022, at an unnamed location in the American desert.

The team spent two weeks there before testing the blasts, including the destruction of another car. Helpers enlisted a federally licensed explosives engineer, who said it was the most challenging job of his career.

The scorched fragments captured were used by Shl0ms as the basis for releasing 999 NFTs.

After the blast, the team recovered the shards and documented them. They captured a rotating 4K video of each fragment.

The NFT collection auction for $CAR is scheduled for February 25 on the artist’s digital platform.

According to Shl0ms, he spent about $1 million to create the project.

888 NFTs will be sold. The remaining 111 tokens were allocated to the team and the initial investor.

The proceeds will be used, among other things, to create a non-profit DAO made up of “ethically minded” participants.

“The technology is incredibly promising […], but with it, so many terrible things are done”, he explained his motives to The Block.

The Lamborghini was chosen because the sportscar embodies “quick money from others for those involved in cryptocurrency.”

“I hate Lamborghinis, and that is why I want to destroy one”, commented on the concept.

The performance with the car was inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain with his own autograph. Shl0ms recreated a similar object before smashing it to pieces. The NFT collection FNTN of 150 fragments earned him $500,000.

Among other works are a 1-pixel image on 100 million pixels, overlaying a blank image on top of the Mona Lisa scan, and an illustration lampooning the artist’s use of blank images. In total, Shl0ms earned $1 million for them.

As reported, the artificial intelligence algorithm Botto earned about $1.3 million from its first six NFT works.
