A large data centre for Bitcoin mining will be established in Buryatia. The decree was signed by the republic’s head, Aleksey Tsydenov, report local media.
The data centre, with a capacity of up to 100 MW, will be located in the Mukhor-Shibir settlement, within the Buryatia Advanced Development Zone. Construction will be undertaken by Bitriver-B.
The facility will be equipped with next-generation ASIC miners with minimal energy consumption, cooling devices, and systems to utilise residual energy.
Nearby, a comprehensive 220 kV-to-0.4 kV step-down transformer substation will be constructed.
Investors plan to invest more than 691 million rubles in the construction and equipment of mining farms. The project is due to be completed within one year.
Authorities in Buryatia said the data centre’s opening would create up to 100 new jobs.
In addition to cloud mining, the company will develop infrastructure for payment systems.
Founded in August 2020, Bitriver-B is registered in Mukhor-Shibir. Its ultimate owner is Igor Runets. In 2019, Runets-owned Bitriver Rus opened a mining farm near the Bratsk Aluminium Plant.
Bitriver does not engage directly in mining but provides equipment and technical services. The company cooperates with investors from Japan, China and the United States.
Earlier in October, the Russian industrial mining operator BitCluster opened a large data centre on the site of the closed NorNickel plant in Norilsk.
Its total computing power could reach roughly 1% of the Bitcoin network’s total hashrate.
