
Authors Guild accuses OpenAI of copyright infringement
The Authors Guild, representing writers in the United States, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. The claims concern the alleged mass use of copyrighted works for training a large language model (LLM).

According to court documents, the organization seeks damages under the Copyright Act.
\n\n
\n\”These algorithms lie at the heart of the defendants’ large-scale commercial enterprise. The basis of the developed algorithms lies in systematic theft on a mass scale,\” the document states.

LLMs threaten writers’ livelihoods. The defendant could train its models on works not covered by copyright licensing, or pay a licensing fee for the use of copyrighted works.

In July, the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists began a strike against the use of artificial intelligence in the film industry.

Earlier in the month, American stand-up, film and television actress Sarah Silverman filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms and OpenAI for copyright infringement.
