Bank of Russia: 68% of pyramid schemes are linked to cryptocurrencies

Over the past nine months, the number of pyramid schemes that raised funds in various cryptocurrencies or advertised investments in digital assets has increased. This was reported by РИА Новости, citing the Bank of Russia.

According to the regulator, such projects account for 68% of the total.

The regulator also noted the emergence of pyramids in the form of online games. They sell game characters tied to tokens based on smart contracts to give the appearance of real activity.

“Users are offered to rent out their game characters to obtain ‘passive income’, and to participate in a multi-level referral program. The latter is said to pay rewards only from funds raised from new participants,” the press service said.

The regulator identified 382 pyramids in the form of economic games.

Earlier in October, Deputy Finance Minister Alexey Moiseev said that all digital assets have properties of a pyramid scheme.
