Beijing and Suzhou extend metro payments to the digital yuan.
Participants in Beijing’s CBDC trial can pay fares on all metro lines with the CBDC. The corresponding decision was adopted by the capital’s municipal authorities.
Residents of the metropolis who registered through the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) mobile apps can use the option.
In June more than $6 million was distributed among 250,000 Beijing residents as part of CBDC testing. This is the second lottery in the capital of the PRC — in February the administration raffled off 10 million digital yuan among residents.
The message states that the ability to top up digital wallets for payments at all CBDC-enabled points will be preserved even after the testing ends.
As previously reported, ICBC ATMs in Beijing added the option to convert yuan into its digital version.
Earlier, the Agricultural Bank of China tested CBDC in its Shenzhen ATMs.
