The National Bank of Belarus continues to work on issuing the digital Belarusian ruble. stated Dmitry Kalechits, deputy chairman of the regulator’s board.
He said that, given sanctions and Belarus’s restricted access to international payment systems, there is particular interest in cross-border payments using CBDC.
Kalechits added that the National Bank defines the digital Belarusian ruble as legal tender performing all the functions of money. It will have the same value as the cash and cashless national currency.
In April, Belarus developed and approved concept of the national digital currency. Around the same time, the regulator began developing a pilot platform.
