Belarus to Launch Digital Ruble by 2026
In the latter half of 2026, Belarus will see the full implementation of the digital ruble (CBDC). This was announced by the Chairman of the Board of the National Bank, Roman Golovchenko, during the program “Current Interview,” as reported by BELTA.
The National Bank has identified three main areas for the CBDC launch:
- development of platform requirements;
- creation of software;
- establishment of a regulatory framework.
“The issue of funds security remains a priority for us. This concerns the ability to track the movement of the digital ruble at all stages,” noted Golovchenko.
Initially, companies will gain access to the asset. In 2027, it will become available to government bodies and citizens.
The National Bank also plans to use the digital ruble in cross-border transactions. Golovchenko specified that Belarus is actively collaborating with Russia in this area, developing approaches for the mutual integration of national currencies.
In April 2023, the country developed and approved the CBDC concept, and in July, plans for its use were announced.
