Experts from the platform noted that since September, the kingdom has sold the primary cryptocurrency for at least $100 million. Approximately 5,600 BTC, valued at about $372 million, remain in wallets identified by Arkham.
According to analysts, mining has been the main source of bitcoin accumulation for Bhutan. At its peak, the country’s reserve exceeded 13,000 BTC.
The volume of digital gold mining surged at the beginning of 2023 but significantly declined after the fourth halving of the first cryptocurrency’s network. The reduction of the block reward from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC occurred in April 2024.
The mining operations powered by the government in partnership with Bitdeer were expected to reach a capacity of 600 MW. Jihan Wu’s company commissioned the Gedu data center in August 2023. However, achieving the planned hashrate of 20 EH/s at the facility has been significantly delayed, Arkham emphasized.
In the second half of 2024, industry experts noted that miners faced the most severe profit crisis in history.
At the beginning of 2025, amid the decline in the first cryptocurrency’s prices, many popular mining equipment models approached the profitability threshold.
The drop in bitcoin prices and rising energy tariffs triggered a mass shutdown of equipment by companies due to record losses, leading to a reduction in hashrate. Another negative factor was the aftermath of a winter storm in the United States.
Earlier, on February 7, bitcoin mining difficulty adjusted by 11%. This was the most significant drop in the metric since the cryptocurrency mining ban in China in 2021.
