Bhutan to Transition National ID System to Ethereum

Bhutan shifts its national ID system to Ethereum for better security.

The Kingdom of Bhutan will transfer its national digital identification system (NDI) from Polygon to Ethereum. Authorities cited a desire to enhance data security, reports BBS.

The process will begin with the integration of NDI with Ethereum. The full transition of the platform is expected by the first quarter of 2026. The project was initially launched on Polygon in August 2024.

“By transitioning to Ethereum, we further strengthen the security of our digital identification,” stated GovTech Secretary Jigme Tenzing.

NDI employs self-sovereign identification technology, allowing nearly 800,000 residents to store and transmit digital credentials for access to online services.

The launch ceremony was attended by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi. She described Bhutan as the first country to “anchor its national digital identification system on Ethereum.”

Miyaguchi added that this move brings us closer to “a more open and secure digital future.”

According to BitcoinTreasuries, Bhutan ranks sixth globally in terms of bitcoin reserves. The country holds 6,371 BTC.

Back in July, the government transferred 512 BTC to Binance.
