Biden administration steps up work on the digital dollar

An interagency working group under the Biden administration will begin regular meetings to study the launch of CBDC. According to The Block.

Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the White House, the Treasury and other federal agencies want to back ongoing research by the Fed with the digital dollar.

An unnamed senior administration official noted that the United States wants to prepare for the launch of a CBDC if the Treasury decides that the initiative serves the country’s interests.

Administration officials stressed that the decision will ultimately be made by the Fed. Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard had previously said that the digital dollar is not at the top of their agenda.

Earlier, in January 2022 the Fed released отчет по итогам изучения CBDC. The regulator noted that the emergence of a dedicated digital form would allow the US dollar to maintain its status as the world’s reserve currency.

Later, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that his agency would not continue studying the possibility of launching CBDC without Congressional involvement.

On March 9, President Joe Biden signed an executive order coordinating federal agencies in regulating cryptocurrencies. The document required examining the opportunities, benefits and risks of issuing a central bank digital currency.

The Treasury highlighted the advantages of national digital currencies for financial stability, and Lael Brainard saw in them a neutral, trusted settlement layer in the future crypto-financial system.
