Bill Gates says GPT is the most important breakthrough since the graphical user interface in 1980

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates назвал GPT the most revolutionary achievement in technology since the advent of the graphical user interface (GUI) in 1980.

Previously, people used the command line to interact with computers. Gates built Windows around the graphical user interface, creating software familiar to everyone.

Now the businessman drew parallels with GPT models capable of writing convincing text and generating working code.

According to Gates, in 2022 he challenged the OpenAI team to develop an AI algorithm capable of passing the Advanced Placement Biology test. The recently introduced GPT-4 заявили developers.

«The whole experience was staggering. […] I knew I had just witnessed the most important technological progress since the graphical user interface,» wrote Gates.

He added that AI development is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the internet and the mobile phone. According to the billionaire, the technology will change the ways people interact, learn, and communicate.

«Around it [AI] entire industries will reorient themselves. Businesses will stand out by how well they use it,» he added.

Gates also urged balancing the “well-founded” fears about AI’s drawbacks with its ability to improve people’s lives. According to the billionaire, governments and philanthropic organisations should support the development of the technology in education and healthcare.

«AI improvements will be especially important in poor countries, where most deaths occur among children under five,» he wrote.

In February Gates named AI “the most important” innovation of the modern era.

In the same month Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang compared the emergence of ChatGPT with the invention of the iPhone and said the chatbot “democratised computing”.
