The cryptocurrency exchange Binance has asked a federal court in Texas to dismiss an $8 million fraud suit, as Law360 reports.
Divya Gadasalli, a resident of the state, accused the company of “aiding and abetting” a romance scam. According to the complaint, in May 2021 the woman met the alleged scammer on Tinder — he reportedly posed as a successful investor and persuaded her to invest funds in cryptocurrencies.
Gadasalli accused the man of conspiracy, fraud and deception, and Binance of “aiding and abetting conversion.” Among the defendants were the cryptocurrency exchange Poloniex, TD Bank, and the federal savings bank Abacus Bank. The total damages sought amount to $8 million.
A Binance spokesperson said that Gadasalli could not explain how the exchange could have known about the allegedly stolen funds. The company noted that it does not operate in the United States and, as a foreign entity, is not subject to the country’s federal judiciary.
In 2021, users of online dating services handed over to scammers $139 million in cryptocurrencies.
