
Bitfinex Case Defendant Heather Morgan Says NFT Projects Bearing Her Name Are Scams

The defendant in laundering assets stolen from the Bitfinex exchange Heather Morgan has broken six months of silence. She said she is not involved in any cryptocurrency projects.

“Any cryptocurrency or NFT project using my name or image is a scam that I do not endorse,” she wrote.

Earlier Morgan positioned herself as a rapper and artist specialising in collages, sculpture, painting and fashion design. A post published on August 23 was the first since February 2022. At that time U.S. authoritiesannounced her arrest.

Morgan and her husband Ilya Lichtenstein have been named as involved in the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack and the laundering of 119,754 BTC. They face up to 25 years in prison.
\n\n
Representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice also announced the largest seizure of digital assets in the department’s history—94,636 BTC ($3.6 billion at the time).

On February 15, Morganwas released on $3 million bail. In court, there was insufficient evidence apart from the assertion that she “allegedly received funds related to the case.”
