Bitmain ends funding for Bitcoin Core developers

The cryptocurrency mining equipment manufacturer Bitmain has halted funding for several developers involved in the Bitcoin ecosystem, according to Bitcoin Core developer Jonas Schnelli.

Schnelli had received support from Bitmain for more than three years. Along with him, funding was cut for his colleague, known on GitHub by the handle “promag”.

“Thank you to Bitmain for the help (despite the disagreements we had),” wrote the developer.

Some Twitter users supported the post’s author in the replies. According to one of them, few have done more for Bitcoin than Schnelli.

Swiss cryptocurrency project Relai said it would be glad to direct part of its revenue toward Bitcoin development.

CEO of Marathon Patent Group Merrick Okamoto asked Schnelli to get in touch to discuss sponsorship.

Earlier in November Bitcoin developers John Newbery and Mike Schmidt created an independent non-profit organization, Brink. It received support from the company Square Crypt, Kraken and Gemini.
