The Russian operator of mining data centers BitRiver has successfully verified the report for the second half of 2021 on net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. ForkLog has learned from the company’s representatives.
The verification was conducted by the British company BSI. According to its conclusion, direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions by BitRiver’s data centers are zero.
The calculation is based on the use of I-REC certificates, confirming the consumption by the company of electricity generated from renewable sources in accordance with ESG principles.
“Our largest data center in Bratsk uses alternative energy, adheres to the world’s best practices, and does not harm the environment,” said Igor Runets, the company’s CEO.
At present, BitRiver operates five proprietary data centers. A further 15 projects are under development in Russia and abroad. The total power consumption of the data centers is 300 MW, and, according to the company, by the end of 2022 it is expected to increase more than sixfold.
In July 2021, the Nasdaq-listed The9 signed an equipment hosting agreement for mining cryptocurrencies with BitRiver through its 100% subsidiary NBTC Limited.
Following the ban on Bitcoin mining in China, BitRiver’s data centers received applications to host 1.8 million miners.
