The Nevada-based blockchain incubator Blockchains announced plans to build a smart crypto-city in the American desert. This was disclosed by the company’s chief executive, Jeffrey Burns, in an interview with Associated Press.
In 2018 Blockchains bought 67,000 acres (more than 27,000 hectares) of land in Storey County за $170 млн. Burns urged Nevada authorities to create on these lands an ‘innovation zone’ where the company would establish a local government.
According to the executive, the current structure of governance is ill-suited to building a blockchain- and crypto-based community. He described the city as a place ‘where people can simply start from scratch’.
The project’s backers aim to maximise the potential of blockchain technologies and give residents the ability to transact using only digital assets.
The company plans to build 15,000 homes and around 300 hectares of commercial and industrial space. Under Blockchains’ plan, the project would take 75 years to complete, and operations could begin in 2022.
In January, the American rapper Akon received permission from authorities to build the Akon City crypto-city in Senegal.
