Brazil court orders cryptocurrency fraud suspect to pay $3.7 billion

The Rio de Janeiro court ordered GAS Consultoria founder Glaidson Acácio dos Santos to deposit 19 billion reais (~$3.7 billion). The funds will be used to compensate victims of cryptocurrency fraud, according to O Globo.

The ruling was handed down on September 19. Santos was given 72 hours to comply.

In August 2021 the founder of GAS Consultoria arrested in the course of Operation Kryptos, linked to an alleged pyramid scheme.

At the time, police seized cryptocurrency worth 150 million reais (~$28.7 million), $3.6 million in cash, 21 premium cars and various jewellery.

The report said more than 122,000 investors were harmed by the fraudsters’ actions.

Authorities also charged Santos with serious crimes, including murder.

Earlier, the Brazilian Federal Police liquidated Bitcoin Banco Group, whose actions harmed more than 7,000 citizens and exceeded $300 million. Its leader Cláudio Oliveira, known as the “King of Bitcoins”, was arrested.

Earlier, in January 2022, Brazilian authorities arrested the founder and CEO of the cryptocurrency pyramid Mirror Trading International, Johann Steinberg, who had been sought by Interpol and the FBI since 2019.
