Britain to spend $130m on AI chips

The British authorities will spend £100 million (~$130 million) on AI chips used to process AI tasks. The Telegraph.

The decision was taken as part of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s initiative to transform the country into an AI-tech hub. There is currently a global chip shortage amid the race to boost computing power.

According to the report, the Agency for Research and Innovation is at a late stage of ordering 5,000 GPUs from NVIDIA. Talks are also under way with AMD and Intel.

The agency could seek an increase in funding at the AI Security Summit scheduled for November.

Earlier in May 2023, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority initiated an investigation into the AI industry.

In April, Sunak announced a grant of £100 million to stimulate the development of ‘sovereign AI’.
