The bitcoins were sent to philanthropist Shin Fujiyama, the founder of Students Helping Honduras, an organization combating poverty through educational development.
Fujiyama is currently participating in a 3,000 km charity run to raise funds for school construction. He expressed gratitude to Bukele for his contribution to the project.
The President of El Salvador is a staunch supporter of the first cryptocurrency. In 2021, the country recognized bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar.
Subsequently, the president announced purchases of digital gold, mining, and other initiatives.
In August 2024, he stated that the legalization of bitcoin yielded mixed results, as the coin did not achieve widespread adoption.
Currently, 7.5% of Salvadorans use bitcoin for transactions, while 92% admitted they do not.
