Hackers stole around $27,000 in bitcoin from a 48-year-old California resident through a SIM swap, according to Fox KTVU.

The man said he received a message from his mobile carrier, T-Mobile, about freezing the account after failed attempts to change the password. The information was confirmed for the number provided.

The man received a new password for the email tied to his Ledger cryptocurrency wallet. He was later called by someone allegedly from the developer company and told that the storage had been breached.

The caller requested the password and account IDs. The California resident supplied the data, and after checking the wallet, he found that the bitcoins had disappeared.

In November 2020, a Dublin resident was sentenced to prison for the theft of more than $2 million in cryptocurrency.

Earlier, SIM-swappers stole 100,000 BCH and 1,550 BTC worth about $45 million.
