Canaan to supply 17,352 miners to Australian Mawson Infrastructure

Mawson Infrastructure orders 17,352 ASIC miners from Canaan.

The Sydney-based Mawson Infrastructure Group ordered 17,352 ASIC miners from Canaan, the Chinese manufacturer said in a press release.

Under the terms of the agreement, Canaan will deliver Avalon A1166 and A1246 devices to Mawson’s facilities in Australia and the United States during 2021 and 2022.

The batch’s total hash rate is estimated at 1.5 EH/s.

The order was a supplement to the previous agreement for Mawson’s purchase of 11,760 units of A1246 with a total hash rate of 1.05 EH/s.

In December 2019, Iterative Capital Management’s Leo Zhang suggested that Canaan might abandon mining-equipment production. The company lagged technologically behind rivals and largely focused on developing artificial intelligence chips AI.

In July 2020 the firm introduced new devices, but in energy efficiency the Avalon 1146 Pro and 1166 Pro lagged about 40% behind Bitmain and MicroBT miners.

Canaan finally narrowed the gap to industry leaders in September, thanks to the AvalonMiner A1246.

During this period, a shortage of mining equipment arose in the market as demand from outside China grew.

Only in 2021 did Canaan sign substantial deals to sell equipment with Blockcap, Genesis Digital Assets and HIVE Blockchain Technologies.

In June the Chinese manufacturer said foreign customers accounted for 78% of revenue.

That same year the company opened its first own Bitcoin mining operation in Kazakhstan.

In January, Canaan introduced the Avalon A1066I miner model with immersion cooling.
