Canadian IoT device maker halts operations after ransomware attack

The internal systems of the Canadian Internet of Things (IoT) device maker Sierra Wireless have been paralysed by a ransomware attack. Reports ZDNet.

According to documents filed by the company with the [simple_tooltip content=’Комиссия по ценным бумагам и биржам США’]SEC[/simple_tooltip], the attack occurred on March 20. An unnamed malware encrypted the company’s internal network, denying staff access to documents and systems related to manufacturing and planning.

Sierra Wireless temporarily suspended operations at its manufacturing sites, most of which require up-to-date access to customer orders and product specifications. The company’s website was also down at the time of writing.

Sierra Wireless says that customer-facing products were not affected due to a clear separation of internal IT systems.

It is not yet known which ransomware program attacked Sierra Wireless or how it managed to gain access to the network. It is also unclear whether the company paid the attackers for data recovery, or whether the affected information was restored from backups.

The company declined to share further details about the attack, promising to resume operations soon.

Sierra Wireless is one of the largest manufacturers of wireless equipment. Its products are embedded in billions of IoT devices, including cars, smartphones and industrial equipment.

In mid-March, media reported that Acer, the computer giant, was the victim of the REvil ransomware. Hackers demanded the largest public ransom in the amount of $50 million in Monero.
