In Canada, the number of robberies targeting large cryptocurrency investors at their own homes is rising. That was stated by representatives of the Richmond RCMP.
Authorities suspect that the perpetrators are aware of the victims’ substantial holdings in digital assets and of their place of residence. Over the past year, RCMP officers in Richmond and Delta (British Columbia) have recorded several incidents.
“In each case, the suspects gain access to the home by posing as couriers or government officials. Once inside, they steal information from victims that provides access to their cryptocurrency accounts,” the statement said.
Investigators have not yet linked the robberies to one another and have not disclosed case details. In the RCMP’s view, there may be more victims, but they have not come forward to authorities.
The police urged crypto investors to stay vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their assets.
As reported in March, the 23-year-old self-styled “crypto king” Aiden Pleterski of Canada became a victim of kidnappers, who tortured him and demanded a $3 million ransom.
