Cardano developers begin implementing Vasil on the mainnet

The Input Output Global (IOG, formerly IOHK) team has entered the final stage of activating the Vasil update on the Cardano mainnet. According to the company’s head Charles Hoskinson, developers initiated the hard fork combinator mechanism.

“The request for the hard fork combinator was submitted and accepted. What this means is that the process has begun. […] We will all sit and watch as the Vasil rocket takes off. It is already in the air. […] Now there is no turning back. It has already begun,” he said.

The Hard Fork Combinator (Hard Fork Combinator, HFC) — a protocol-assembly tool developed by IOG that allows large-scale blockchain updates to be conducted in the background.

The HFC was first used in July 2020, when Cardano activated the Shelley upgrade. The mechanism prevents blockchain integrity violations and network downtime, since nodes do not need to update to the latest software simultaneously — the transition is gradual.

As planned, Vasil will be activated in the mainnet September 22, 2022. However, according to Hoskinson, for a number of technical reasons some changes will only take effect on September 27.

The head of IOG also urged community members to update the Daedalus digital wallet to the latest version (5.0.0), which contains several important fixes.

Vasil includes four network improvement proposals aimed at lowering transaction fees and increasing network security. The update will also simplify interaction with smart contracts.

Earlier, on July 3, 2022, the IOG team activated the Vasil upgrade on the testnet.
