Celo Team Completes Blockchain Migration to Ethereum’s Layer 2

Following a successful “hard hard fork,” Celo’s core developers from cLabs have officially relaunched the network as an L2 solution on Ethereum.

“First launched as a mainnet on Earth Day 2020 as an EVM-compatible Proof-of-Stake Layer 1 blockchain and a Geth fork, Celo has grown into an ecosystem of over 1000 projects in more than 150 countries with 11 million active addresses and 720 million transactions,” the team stated.

The L2 network is built on Optimism’s OP Stack using EigenLayer’s data availability layer.

The blockchain retains its core features such as block production speed of one second, ultra-low fees, and gas payments in any ERC-20 tokens, including USDT and USDC.

The migration to L2 allows Celo to:

  • join Ethereum’s shared roadmap focused on rollups and modular scalability;
  • enhance composability with base network applications and protocols;
  • provide developers access to the full suite of libraries and tools of the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization;
  • expand liquidity and presence.

Over 100 Celo partners, including Aave, Fireblocks, and Uniswap, supported the transition, ensuring the relaunch of applications within two hours.

Back in 2023, the decision for reintegration with Ethereum was made for the project.
