Changpeng Zhao comments on SEC investigation into the BNB token

Changpeng Zhao, chief executive of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, spoke at the Consensus 2022 conference about reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is examining the BNB token. Coindesk.

He noted that the company ‘from time to time’ receives various questions from regulators, including the SEC, and is in constant contact with authorities.

According to him, the Commission asked questions about BNB as well, but the exchange had not received formal subpoenas. Zhao expressed confidence that the token is not a security.

Media outlets, citing sources, reported that the SEC is investigating whether the BNB token was a security at the time of its sale in 2017.

In 2021 there were also reports of an investigation into Binance’s activities by another U.S. regulator—the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

At the time, the company stated that the agency was simply trying to understand the rapidly growing cryptocurrency industry.
