Chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen receives NFT trophy for tournament victory
For the first time in chess history, Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen получил a trophy in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) for his victory in the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour (MCCT).
Carlsen told Cointelegraph about the MCST’s collaboration with cryptocurrency exchange FTX, which allowed chess players to compete for a prize pool of 2.1825 BTC (approximately $123,300 at the time of writing).
The grandmaster signed two copies of the Champion’s Trophy NFT on the Ethereum blockchain. One of the tokens was auctioned off for 6.88 ETH (nearly $25,000 at the time of writing).
“It is a pleasure to share the trophy with a passionate fan. It will be interesting to play a match with him and meet him at the tournament final next season,” Carlsen said.
Earlier in November 2020, Ethereum co-founder played a chess game with Canadian national team player Alexandra Botez in a livestream.
