China launches crackdown on copyright infringement in NFT creation

The National Copyright Administration of China (CNAC) intends to tighten penalties for the unauthorized use of others’ artworks to create NFTs.

Creators of non-fungible token (NFT) collections will be prohibited from creating them based on music, animation, games, films and television content without the copyright holder’s permission.

The tightening of copyright enforcement in the context of innovative technologies is being carried out under the special campaign “Jianwan 2022”. It will also affect the education, sports, news and streaming online platforms segments.

CNAC believes that standardising regulation will give a boost to local entrepreneurship and attract international business to the country’s market.

The Jianwan 2022 campaign is conducted jointly with the Ministry of Public Security and the Cyberspace Administration of China, and will run from September to November.

Earlier in July, Chinese tech giants Tencent Holdings, Baidu, JD.com, Ant Group and several other companies adopted a ‘self-discipline’ initiative to curb NFT market speculation.

Earlier, in autumn 2021, Tencent and Ant Group changed the term NFT to ‘digital collectibles’. Other platforms also distanced themselves from the definition of ‘non-fungible tokens’.
