China regulator to scrutinise recommendation algorithms of tech giants
The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) will review the operation of recommendation algorithms used by tech giants such as ByteDance and Tencent. Bloomberg reports.
According to the CAC, during on-site inspections the companies will be obliged to provide their content-recommendation services. The audit will cover large websites, platforms and products with substantial influence, although their names were not disclosed.
The regulator will assess how social networks present advertising and content to attract users.
The campaign aims to implement and ensure compliance with the rules published in August 2021. They regulate the use of content-recommendation algorithms for users. The rules came into force on 1 March 2022.
This is part of a broader set of measures aimed at curbing the growing influence of China’s largest corporations, whose platforms control spheres of public discourse and entertainment.
In January 2022, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) proposed a framework for regulating deepfakes.
In October 2021, China’s Ministry of Science and Technology unveiled a set of ethical principles for AI governance.
