CIS interior ministers discuss combating crimes involving cryptocurrencies

The Council of Ministers of Internal Affairs of CIS member states discussed cooperation in the fight against crime, including violations involving blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies. «Interfax» reports, citing the Kazakh Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Participants emphasised information-sharing in investigations into offences.

Erlan Turgumbaev, head of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, urged cooperation in solving crimes committed using information technologies.

In September, Russia’s Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov urged his colleagues to coordinate the fight against cybercrime, including hacker attacks and the illicit trade in cryptocurrencies.

Former CIA officer Michael Morell said that the scale of bitcoin use in illicit activity was exaggerated and stated that blockchain analysis would enable effective crime-fighting.
