The cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase published a transparency report for the second half of 2020. During the period from July 1 to December 31, the company received 2,313 government information requests.
The overwhelming majority of requests (95.7%) related to criminal investigations. Three jurisdictions — the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany — accounted for about 90% of the total.
During the reporting period, U.S. government agencies sent Coinbase 1,197 requests. Of these:
- FBI — 362;
- Customs police — 248;
- local government authorities — 161;
- Drug Enforcement Administration — 121.
The company added that for the full year 2020 it received about 4,227 requests. Of these, 54% were in the second half.
Coinbase also noted that the number of requests from France rose by 20%.
Earlier in October 2020, the exchange published a transparency report for the first half of the year. For six months, Coinbase received 1914 правительственных запросов.
