The number of tokens surpassed one million in September 2022, reaching 1.15 million by the year’s end, marking a 159.2% annual increase.
In 2023, the number of cryptocurrencies grew by another 72.3%, reaching 1.98 million.
The pace of new coin creation accelerated in 2024. As of April 11, 0.54 million tokens had already been created, averaging 5300 new cryptocurrencies daily.
For comparison, experts noted that 0.71 million coins were created throughout 2022.
CoinGecko specialists highlighted that during the “first meme coin season” in May 2023, 104,118 tokens were launched. The trend revived in March 2024, setting a new record with 195,735 new coins in a month.
“As token launches become easier with platforms like Pump.fun and online trading becomes more accessible, future meme coin seasons could lead to even greater surges,” experts concluded.
However, they noted that it remains uncertain whether growth will be exponential, as the crypto industry aims to tokenize real-world assets (RWA) on a larger scale.
In the community, opinions are divided regarding the latest meme coin boom. Some have criticized it, while others see benefits for the industry.
