Court awards Craig Wright £1 in libel case against Peter McCormack

The self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto, Craig Wright, won the case against the Bitcoin podcast host Peter McCormack. The High Court of the United Kingdom присудил выплатить компенсацию в размере £1, указав на предоставление ‘deliberately false statements’.

According to the verdict, Wright would be ‘unduly’ entitled to receive more than a symbolic amount, since his arguments guaranteed ‘more than a direct diminution’ of the harm. The evidence he presented was ‘not simply inadequate or incorrectly explained’, but also false.

The court found that McCormack’s tweets about Wright caused serious damage to the latter.

The self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto подал иск о защите чести в 2019 году. Он потребовал £100 000 в качестве компенсации ущерба и покрытия издержек на судебный процесс.

According to documents, Wright asserted that he had not been invited to various scientific conferences. McCormack, in turn, presented evidence from event organisers that the claimant’s assertions were not accurate.

Judge Martin Chamberlain also disagreed with Wright about the grounds for amending the claim. The latter withdrew a substantial number of his arguments, citing the inadvertent nature of the inaccuracies.

The defendant expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the proceedings.

“We are very pleased with the judge’s findings,” — said he.

As some of you will now have seen, the judgement in my trial v Dr. Craig Wright has now been handed down.

I want to thank my lawyers for their diligent work on the case.

I also want to thank Mr Justice Chamberlain for this result. We are very pleased with his findings.

Representatives of Wright at Ontier LLP also welcomed the court’s decision. In a пресс-релизе they said that he confirmed the damage to the claimant’s reputation by McCormack’s statements.

The self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto announced plans to appeal on the grounds that the court did not take into account his Asperger’s syndrome. на этом basis, he added that his evidence had been misinterpreted.

“Over time independent courts in different jurisdictions […] have come to the conclusion that I am who I present myself to be, since in 2015 the media named me Satoshi”, — Wright said.

The plaintiff vowed to continue his legal battles until ‘harmful attacks aimed at diminishing his reputation cease’.

In April 2020, Craig Wright withdrew his libel claim against Blockstream CEO Adam Back and paid his costs.

A similar decision was reached in the case against Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

Wright’s suit against Bitcoin investor Hodlonaut was dismissed by the British court for lack of jurisdiction. In June 2019 the investor filed a counterclaim in Norway, where he resides.

In 2020, media reported Wright’s suit against the founder and executive chairman of Bitcoin.com Roger Ver in the High Court of Antigua and Barbuda. A year earlier, the self-proclaimed Satoshi Nakamoto had filed a similar suit in the High Court of England and Wales, but it was subsequently dismissed.

In June 2021 Wright won the case over the Bitcoin white paper against Cobra. The latter was barred from infringing copyright in the UK by providing access to the white paper on Bitcoin.org or any other method.

In 2019 Wright obtained copyright over the Bitcoin white paper and the source code. Later the US Copyright Office clarified that it did not recognise him as the creator of the digital gold.
