Crusoe to Launch 1.2 GW Data Center for AI
Mining company Crusoe Energy Systems, in collaboration with technology firm Lancium, has announced a multi-billion dollar deal to construct a 200 MW data center for AI. This was reported by CNBC.
According to the channel, the facility will be established near the city of Abilene, Texas. It is designed to meet the unique needs of companies engaged in AI, such as providing cloud computing for medical research and aircraft design.
The project is planned to expand to a capacity of 1.2 GW. Lancium President Ali Fenn told CNBC that it will be one of the largest data centers in the world for neural networks.
“Data centers are rapidly evolving to support modern AI workloads. They require increased equipment density, liquid chip cooling, and unprecedented energy demands,” noted Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller.
The facility in Abilene is expected to be operational by 2025, with plans to primarily use renewable energy sources.
As the burgeoning artificial intelligence industry requires capacity and miners seek new profit avenues following the halving, partnerships between companies from both sectors are becoming increasingly common.
Previously, Core Scientific signed a 12-year contract with AI firm CoreWeave to provide 200 MW of infrastructure for hosting Nvidia graphics processors.
Hut 8 entered into an agreement with a fund managed by Coatue Management, which will invest $150 million in the firm through convertible bonds.
In July, Bernstein experts noted that miners are attractive partners for creating AI data centers due to their access to power sources and operational capabilities.
Back in June, Bitwise predicted a $20 trillion increase in global GDP due to cryptocurrency and AI.
In January 2021, oil giant ExxonMobil, in collaboration with Crusoe, launched a pilot project to use flare gas to power bitcoin mining.
